![]() Getting into the warm water of the pool felt completely freeing. I knew if anyone came in while I swam, we’d probably just give each other plenty of space and not talk, which was fine with me. That usually translated into few, if any, social interactions with strangers. It was considered good etiquette to cover up with a towel when walking to and from other areas, but otherwise clothing free was the norm with respectful distancing and absolute politeness to others in the spa. It wasn’t my first time in the spa and I knew from previous visits that nearly everyone went completely nude while swimming or enjoying the sauna. I quickly washed my face to remove as much makeup as possible, undressed in the locker room, wrapped myself in a large, warm spa towel, then returned to the pool. There was a row of windows high on one wall and I could see people walking by on the sidewalk at the street level above. I went through to the pool area and walked around in its quiet emptiness, the water smooth and still. Even better, I was the only one in the locker room when I went in. I wandered the hallways and the lobby of the hotel, which were mostly empty, and then took the elevator to the spa floor. Before midnight, I excused myself, telling the couple I was with that I was leaving and wishing them a happy New Year. At some point I realized that I just wasn’t up to faking joviality and no amount of champagne was going to make a difference. With all the music and the noise of the crowd, having a conversation was impossible. The party in question happens to be one of the largest in the city in one of the best hotel ballrooms with some of the most notable guests. A co-worker took pity on me and joined me at my hotel, along with his wife, for a party on New Year’s Eve. Through a completely unexpected set of circumstances, during the Christmas season a few years ago, I found myself alone in Frankfurt, Germany. What you can do, though, is make yourself open and ready. ![]() There really is no way to plan for these moments or anticipate them. Some of the best times in life are completely spontaneous. ![]()
